Overview

Cerebrospinal fluid is a colourless, clear liquid that in a healthy individual has 2-3 lymphocytes per mm2.

In adults its volume is usually 100-140ml and its normal pressure is between 70-120mm of water when a patient is on their side.

Total protein in adult cerebrospinal fluid varies from 20 to 45 %mg and total glucose varies from 50 to 75 %mg. Chlorides are between 120 and 230m eq/lit. It is an approximately isotonic solution.
