Functions of CSF

Cerebrospinal fluid has many functions. It provides the brain with mechanical protection by acting as a cushion. It distributes neurendocrine factors and prevents ischemia.

Brain ischemia is prevented by decreasing the amount of cerebrospinal fluid in the limited space in the skull. This decreases the total intracranial pressure and assists with blood profusion.

As the CSF contains many neurotransmitters, homones and other biochemically active substances it can also act as a messenger. It can provide information about the state of the central nervous system and detect any problems such as infection.

CSF provides the brain with nutrients and removes waste products of cell metabolism.

Cerebrospinal fluid also cushions the spinal cord againsts jarring shock.
